NEW IBERIA – Funeral services will be celebrated for Mrs. Dorothy Jean Ferguson Walker, age 85, at 1:00 pm Saturday, November 12, 2011 at the Church of Christ. Pastor Ken Wright will officiate. Interment will follow at Beau Pre Cemetery.
A gathering of family and friends will be held at Evangeline Funeral Home on Friday from 11:00 am until 10:00 pm, and will resume on Saturday from 9:00 am until 12:30 pm.
Dorothy was born August 1, 1926 in Beattie, Texas and passed away peacefully Monday, November 7, 2011 at her son, Darryl Walker's residence in Fenton with him by her side, where he had been caring for her throughout her illness, along with his sister Janet Walker Carroll and family friend Skipper Dewayne Ardoin.
She lived most of her life in New Iberia where she was a longtime member of the Church of Christ. Dorothy was a member of many Pokeno Clubs and was played bridge with her church friends. She was also an avid bowler, having bowled in many leagues and was a member of the WIBC Womens Bowling Association. She loved sports of all kinds and played softball and volleyball with her church. Besides being a homemaker and caring for her family, she worked for a while with Bodins Foot Mart in New Iberia. Many will remember her for her love of children, and as a generous and kind person who would help anyone in need. She leaves behind many fond memories that will forever be cherished by all who knew and loved her.
Survivors include her children, Linda Jean Walker Duplantis and husband Eddie and Norma Gail Walker Desormeaux and husband Ronnie of Lake Charles, Janet Marie Walker Carroll and husband Barry of Carencro, and Darryl Wayne Walker of Fenton; nine grandchildren, Tammy Lynn Trahan, Quint Anthony Hebert, Laura Gail Hawkins, Ronald Stuart Taylor, Lindzi Claire Rodrigue, Cory Jude Broussard, Brett Michael Rodrigue, Brad Allison Walker and Kristi Lynn Steffine; numerous great grandchildren; and her brother and sister, Bobby Elton Ferguson of Comanche, TX and Catherine Ruby Ferguson Ferrell of Sherman, TX.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Allison Walker; her parents, Albert Sidney Johnson Ferguson and Evie Kelley Ferguson; a grandson, Clarence Johnson Wolfe, IV; sisters, Opal Mae Booth and Marjorie Geraldine Wilkinson; and brothers, William Irel Ferguson and Sidney Charles Ferguson.
Serving as pallbearers are Barry Coleman, Cory Broussard, Quint Hebert, Brett Rodrigue, Skipper Ardoin, Stuart Taylor, Brad Walker and Barry Carroll. Honorary pallbearers are Eddie Duplantis, Bobby Ferguson, Kent Ferguson and Byron Wilkinson.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the family to assist with expenses.
