Sheila Hussey was born on November 23rd, 1943 in Boherbue, County Cork, Ireland, to Humphrey and Margaret (nee Donoghue) Courtney.
At sixteen, Sheila came to the United States and worked in Shrafts as a waitress. Sheila and Michael Hussey were married in 1966. After the last of their four children were born, they moved from the Bronx to Nanuet and now reside in Pearl River, New York.
Over the years, Sheila volunteered at St. Anthony’s School and Church. She was on the Parish Council and became a Eucharist Minister. She was a school-crossing guard and worked at The Irish Cottage Gift Shop in Pearl River. In 1988, Sheila and Mike purchased The Irish Cottage and ran it for the next nineteen years.
Sheila loved dancing and music. She was a member of the Pearl River Creche Committee and stayed active in St. Anthony’s and local Irish celebrations. A sixty-year member of the Pioneer Total Abstinence Association, she was also part of the Rockland County Irish Cultural Association and loved standing on the grandstand at the Pearl River St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
Sheila is survived by her husband of fifty-three years, Mike, her loving children: Mary-Theresa, Anne, Noreen (Alan Chalmers), and Michael (Marie), and adored grandchildren: Innes, Iain, Keir, and Jacklyn Shae. She is also survived by her brothers and sisters Humphrey, Noreen, Eileen, Peg, Con, Jerry, Pat, Hannah, Tom, and Mary. And by her in-laws, Margaret, Ann, Leo, Peter, Patricia, Liz, Margaret, Tim, and Donie.
She is predeceased by her parents and her siblings Jim, Joan, Denis, Sean, and Dan. And by her in-laws, Joan and Oliver Whelehan, Sheila, Mary, and Eileen.
She was much loved by all the Courtney and Hussey nieces and nephews and extended family and friends.
The wake will be held at Higgins Funeral Home in New City on Monday (7-9) and Tuesday (2-4 and 7-9) with mass of Christian burial at St. Anthony’s on Wednesday at 10:00.
