Sarah C. Harris, of New City, passed away peacefully on January 23rd, 2022 at the age of 86. Sally, as she was known to her friends and family, lived in New City since 1969. Prior to moving here, she resided in Quincy, Massachusetts. She was born on December 19th, 1935 in Boston, Mass and raised in nearby Quincy. She attended the Woodward School for Girls High School. After graduating, she went to the University of Massachusetts. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English in1957. She began her career as an elementary school teacher in Massachusetts, before meeting her future husband. After getting married and living briefly in Massachusetts and New Jersey, the couple moved to New City at the end of December, 1969. She began work as a substitute teacher at Little Tor Elementary before moving on as a customer service representative at AT&T. Sally finished her working career as a customer representative for Rockland County Department of Social Services. Sally retired over two decades ago and filled her time with her favorite hobbies and activities. She was a longtime member of the JCC and played canasta there three times a week. When not playing cards, she loved talking with her friends, reading, meeting up with girlfriends, flitting about in downtown New City and bragging about her grandkids. She enjoyed maintaining her large tropical plant collection. However, it was neither her activities or hobbies that her friends and loved ones remember her for. When Sally comes to mind, we think of 'Pollyanna Sally' - that forever optimist. We think of her as the most likely person to call to be cheered up. Sally had a way with words to help comfort you and to make you feel good about yourself. When Sally would meet a stranger, that person left as a friend and with a smile on their face. Sally was an avid Tom Brady and New England Patriots fan, but her real love and greatest joy was her family.
She is survived by her two sons, Joe and Blair and her daughter-law Leisa. She is also survived by her loving sister, Helene, as well as 5 grandchildren, two great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She will be missed tremendously by all whose lives she touched.
Family will receive friends between 9am-11am on Thursday, January 27th, with our memorial for Sally to begin at 10 am at the Higgins Funeral Home on 321 South Main Street in New City.
In lieu of flowers, Sally wanted donations to be made to St Jude's Hospital. stjude.org
