With profound sadness we announce the passing of the beloved Richard Kenneth Stone, M.D., age 78, on December 18, 2021. Richard spent many years at Metropolitan Hospital in New York, NY, most recently as Medical Director, from which he retired in July 2014. He first came to Metropolitan, or Met as he referred to it, as a third year New York College Medical student in 1966. He was a Chief Resident in Pediatrics at Met in 1968. After active duty at the National Naval Center in Bethesda, MD in 1973, Richard returned to Metropolitan where he served first as Pediatric Residency Director and then Chief of Pediatrics. He was appointed Metropolitan's Medical Director in 1989.
Richard was also a Professor of Clinical Pediatrics in the school of Medicine, and Professor of Clinical Public Health at New York Medical College, where he was also a Senior Associate Dean. He was a Board-Certified Pediatrician, Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the New York Academy of Medicine. He has published books and articles in medical literature and is the recipient of many awards including 2008 Tow Award of Humanism is Medicine from the Arnold Gold Foundation.
Richard is survived by his wife Judith E. Stone, his daughter Laura Ronan Wolfe, her husband David; son Kenneth Stone, his wife Michelle, granddaughter Ella; son Benjamin Stone; Michael and grandson Christian; sister Leslie Starr, her husband Larry and their 3 children.
Richard spent his entire life and career being a teacher, a mentor, a leader. He will be missed by many, especially by his wife and children, and his loving dog, Louie.
