Michael Anthony Murphy

July 16, 1933 to October 28, 2021. Mike died peacefully, surrounded by family, after a short illness. Born in the Bronx to Michael and Mary (McIntosh) Murphy, Mike was a graduate of Our Lady of Refuge grammar school, All Hallows High School, and Iona College. He served with the U.S. Army in Germany.

On August 22, 1959 he married Ellen Kissane at St. Francis of Rome Church. They moved to New City in 1961 and have been communicants of St. Augustine Church, where Mike had been a Bingo worker for more than 40 years. He was a Cubmaster and Boy Scout Committeeman, a coach and Board member of the New City Little League, and a member and past President of New City Senior Club I. He was a member of West Nyack Swim Club for almost 50 years, spending many Sunday afternoons on the hill.

Mike spent his career in the paper industry, the last 30 years with Consolidated Papers, Inc. retiring in 1996 as General Sales Manager.

He is survived by his children: Maribeth (John) Nicastro of Orangeburg, John of New City, Michael (Julie) of Wayne, NJ, Brian (Monica) of Northport, Robert (Jessica) of Mooresville, NC, and Sheila (Brendan) Rhatigan of Pismo Beach, CA, thirteen grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, brother George (Eva) of Sedalia, CO, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mike was predeceased by his wife, Ellen, parents, sister Maureen O’Callaghan, and brother David Murphy.

The family will receive friends at the Higgins Funeral Home, 321 South Main Street, New City, NY on Tuesday November 2 from 4-8PM. Funeral Mass at St. Augustine Church, 140 Maple Avenue, New City, NY on Wednesday November 3 at 10:00AM. Burial to follow at St. Anthony’s Church Cemetery, Nanuet, NY.
