Mary was born in the Bronx to John and Gertrude (Ahearn) O’Connell and was the eldest of four children. Mary was a graduate of St Anselm’s School and Cathedral High School. After marrying her husband John, they moved to New City to raise their three children. Mary became involved in the community and was active with the Link School PTA. Mary was employed by the Town of Clarkstown for over 30 years as a Personnel Administrator. Mary served in Clarkstown and Rockland County as the Chairman of the Rockland Conservative Party as well as an Executive Board Member of the New York State Conservative Party. In 1995, Governor Pataki presented Mary with the J. Daniel Mahoney Award, the most prestigious award given. Mary was pre-deceased by her husband John, parents and brothers John and James. She is survived by her children, John (Gail), Michael (Carla) and Jennifer. She is also survived by her sister, Rita Kelly and grandchildren Kevin, Courtney, Shannon, Amanda and Brian plus many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family will receive relatives and friends at Michael J. Higgins Funeral Home, 321 South Main Street, New City, on Tuesday, September 17th from 4-8 PM.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, September 18th at St. Augustine’s Roman Catholic Church, 140 Maple Ave., New City at 10 AM. Interment will follow at St. Anthony’s Cemetery, Nanuet, NY.
