She was born in the Bronx, NY on September 29, 1933 to John and Bridget McDermott, and relocated to West Nyack, NY in 1966 with her husband James, a NYC Firefighter.
Mary attended Sacred Heart High School in Manhattan. After graduating, she was employed by Capital Airlines as a flight attendant before becoming a Congressional Executive Assistant in the NYC area.
She will be remembered fondly for her welcoming smile, exceptional talent as an Irish Step Dancer, and sharing a nice cup of tea and cake with those she welcomed into her home. Her greatest joy came from spending time with close friends and family. In her passing, Mary joins her beloved husband James, sister Alice (Jeannie) Curley, and youngest brother Thomas McDermott (survived by his wife Grace).
Mary is survived by her brother John McDermott (Valerie) of Valley Cottage, NY, her four children Mary Beth Pocalyko (Nick) of Longmont, CO, James (Jessica) of Sugar Loaf, NY; Janet Grossbauer (Matthew) of New City, NY, and Sean (Christine) of West Nyack, NY. Best known as Nani, she is also survived by her nine grandchildren Kevin, Kyle, Jason, Ryan, Patrick, Kaitlin, Matthew, Shaelynn, Tara, great granddaughter Ellie and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at Michael J. Higgins Funeral Service, 321 South Main St. New City, NY on Tuesday, January 21 from 4-8pm. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, January 22 at 10am at St. Anthony Shrine Church, 36 West Nyack Rd. Nanuet, NY, with the internment to follow at St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery.
