John B. Calcaterra, 77, of Thiells, NY, passed away peacefully at the Joe Raso Hospice Residence in New City on November 22, 2024. John was born in the Bronx to the late Angelo and Sadie Calcaterra on September 26, 1947 and was the beloved husband of Eileen Calcaterra, father of John (Michelle) and Justin (Lauren) Calcaterra, grandfather of Ben, Charlie, Caitlin and Aria Calcaterra, brother of Roseanne Silves, brother-in-law of Peggy Kirchmeier and Mary Sheehy, and uncle of Danielle Shapiro, Jenny Del Monaco, and Diane Udin. He was predeceased by his brothers-in-law Richard Silves and Louis Kirchmeier, and his nephew Richie Silves.
John graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School and attended Manhattan College before being drafted by the United States Army in 1969. He bravely fought in the Vietnam War, where he was awarded several commendations upon being discharged. When he returned home, he finished his education and was employed by J.P. Morgan for more than 25 years.
John was an avid fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers, the New York Giants, the New York Mets, Pink Floyd and The Moody Blues. He stopped whatever he was doing to watch “Once Upon a Time in The West” when it was on television, he excelled at board games, and his bookshelves were lined with John le Carré novels. But his greatest loves were his family and friends, and if you were fortunate enough to be either, you felt this. Whether you needed a battery jumped, a computer repaired, a hand drawn map to wherever you were headed, or a lifetime supply of anything sold at Costco—especially Frank’s Red Hot—John was the guy to call. He delighted in helping those he cared about, and for this we will remember him most. Rest in peace, Pop. We’ll see you on the dark side of the moon.
A funeral mass will be celebrated Tuesday, November 26th at 11:30am at St. Francis of Assisi in West Nyack. Burial to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne. A private visitation will be held at Higgins Funeral Home in New City from 10-11am. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Joe Raso Hospice Residence.
