Joan B. Maloney (née Burke) entered Eternal Life, after a short illness, on November 19, 2018 at Mary Manning Walsh Residence in New York City, with the family gathered around her. Joan was born in Poughkeepsie, New York on December 17, 1927 and shortly after moved to New York City. She attended Corpus Christi grammar school, Cathedral High School and Fordham College.
Joan married John Maloney on June 24, 1950 and enjoyed 68 years of married life. She is survived by her husband, John, daughters Joan Moran and Patricia Maloney Titland, Kenneth Titland, and grandchildren Burke, Freia and Finn Titland. She was predeceased by son, Stephen, and son-in-law, Thomas Moran.
Joan taught elementary school at St. Joseph School in Greenwich Village. She moved to Nanuet in 1961 and was employed as a store detective at R.H. Macy's in Nanuet. Joan was promoted to Director of Security, a position she held for twenty years before she retired. Under her leadership, Joan and her team enhanced security at Macy's. She trained a number of employees who would go on to become future police officers.
Joan was an exceptional basketball player. As captain of Cathedral High School's basketball team, the school won the Archdiocesan trophy in 1946. She coached girls' basketball teams at Corpus Christi parish and again won many Archdiocesan titles. At Nanuet, she coached the girls' CYO basketball teams, winning many championships.
Joan loved Frank Sinatra, the Knicks, was a lifetime Yankees' baseball fan, and a great fan of Joe DiMaggio. Joan was a faithful parishioner of St. Anthony's parish in Nanuet for 57 years.
Friends will gather at the Higgins Funeral Home in New City on Friday, November 23 between 4:00 and 8:00 pm. Mass of the Resurrection will be at St. Anthony's Church, Nanuet at 10:00 am on Saturday, November 24. Internment to follow at St. Anthony Cemetery.
