Janet M. Harrington

Janet Harrington of Valley Cottage, NY, 78 years old, passed away peacefully at home on September 17, 2016. Janet was a resident of Valley Cottage for over 50 years. She was born on December 17, 1937 in the Bronx, New York to John and Margaret Collins. Janet had a wide and varied career. In addition to raising her three children, she was active in the New City Rotary, was a crisis counselor at the Pomona Health Center and served as the branch manager at Provident Bank in New City. Janet was an avid reader of mystery novels and enjoyed The New York TImes crossword puzzle. She had a great love of animals especially her beloved King Charles Spaniel "Clancy." She was a lifelong fan of her New York Giants and enjoyed Sunday games. Janet married the love of her life, Jim Harrington in 1960, and enjoyed 24 happy years of marriage until Jim passed away in 1984. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Kerry and Bernie Cummings of Valley Cottage, her sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Mary Harrington of Irvine, CA and Andrew and Sandra Harrington of New City, her brother and sisters-in -law Donald and Marilyn Collins and Rosemary Collins. Her older brother Richard Collins passed away in 2015. Janet was also a very proud grandmother to 10 grandchildren, Jimmy and Megan Harrington, Colleen, Brendan, Martin and Gerard Cummings and Sean, Colin, Ryan and Kevin Harrington. She cherished her grandchildren and the time she spent with them. She is survived by cousins, nieces, nephews and her many dear friends, including Tom Sakell of New City. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Family will receive friends on Wednesday from 2-4 & 7-9pm at Higgins Funeral Home in New City, NY. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, 10am, St. Paul's Church, Congers, NY, followed by interment at Gethsemane Cemetery, Rockland Lake, NY.
