Jan Edward Smith passed away September 1, 2012, the only child of Velva Carol Loneia Smith and James “Jimmy” Smith, was born in Peoria, Illinois on November 30, 1937. Jan spent his earliest years in Chicago, Illinois were be began school. He completed his education in New York City
He served four years in the United States Navy from 1956 to 1960. In 1960 he married Harriet Hazel Smith and remained a devoted husband until his death in 2012. They lived in Rockland County in New York (first Blauvelt and later New City) for 36 years. They moved to Glen Allen, Va. in 2001.
A true family man he cherished his daughters: Sharon Aileen Smith now Davis of Henrico, Virginia and Stacey Diane Smith now Barnes of Aliso Viejo, California.
Jan was employed by IBM (International Business Machines Corp.) for more than 32 years. Simultaneously, Jan always an advocate of education, attended the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn falling in love with math and computer science. He earned a BS in Math, a MS in Industrial Engineering and a MS in Computer Science. Jan’s loves were first and foremost his family, education, programming, listening to jazz, being an amateur artist and all things New York.
Jan will be loved eternally by his wife of 52 years, their daughters Sharon and Stacey and grandson Stanley Wilson Davis II, granddaughters Sydney Loneia Davis, Mallory Diane Barnes and Nathalie O’Bryan Barnes. Family members: son-in laws Stanley W. Davis (Sharon) and J. Eric Barnes (Stacey), sister-in-law Shirley Hazel Davis and nephew Ricardo Davis both of Brooklyn, NY, cousins Kimberly Browning, Ft. Washington, MD, Lena Smalls of Orange, NJ and long time friends in New York and scattered across the nation all mourn his loss.

New City, NY: Viewing will be on Monday, September 10, 2012 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 6:00 to 9:00 PM at Higgins Funeral Home, 321 South Main Street, New City, NY
On Tuesday, September 11, 2012 a service will be held at Higgins Funeral Home at 11:00 AM
Internment will follow at St. Raymond’s Catholic Cemetery, 1201 Balcom Avenue, Bronx, NY
