Gordon William Wren Sr.

Gordon William Wren, Sr. passed away on February 4th at the age of 98. He was born on October 10th 1921 to William and Irena (Myles) Wren. Gordon graduated from Spring Valley High School in 1939. After graduating, he served in the U.S. Army during WWII in Europe in the infantry where he was wounded.

After returning home, he worked for Weiner Brothers Plumbing and Heating and was a member of Local Union 373 as a plumber and steamfitter for over 40 years.

Gordon served as a volunteer firefighter with the Hillcrest Fire Company, where he was affectionately known as “Gutch”, for 80 years. He was elected Chief from 1949-1952 and was the company treasurer for over 50 years. In his later years, he remained the honored and respected elder statesman who had an encyclopedic knowledge of Fire Company and Rockland County history.

He was the last surviving charter member of the Rockland County Fire Chiefs Association and American Legion Post 1600 Pomona, NY. He served as the financial secretary for the Moleston Fire District and the Rockland County Firefighters Association as well as numerous other Fire Manic Organizations.

Gordon was predeceased by his wife of 40 years, Dorothy Jones of Hillcrest. He is also survived by his 3 sons, Gordon Jr. (Robin), Gary (Eileen) and Tim (Kathleen), his grandchildren, Alexandra Wren, Kimberly O’Gorman(Kieran), Christopher Wren (Christine), Jack, Noelle and Kevin Wren, and his precious great grandchildren, Allie O’Gorman, Alexander and Jameson Wren to whom he was lovingly known as “Poppy”.

Visiting will be Thursday 7-9pm, Friday 4-8pm at the Hillcrest Fire House 374 N. Main Street Spring Valley, NY 10977. American Legion Service Thursday evening 7:30pm & Firematic Service Friday evening 7PM. Service will be held Saturday 11AM, at the Hillcrest Fire House, Spring Valley, NY. Interment to follow at Brick Church Cemetery Spring Valley, NY.
