Born Gladys Elodia Perez Carillo, she adopted her married name, Sanchez, after emigrating to the United States and becoming a citizen. She was born in Remedios, Cuba in 1931 and was raised, educated and married in Florida, Camaguey, Cuba. After the Cuban revolution, she first emigrated to Spain and then to the United States with her daughter.
In New York, she was a licensed beautician and worked in the garment industry for many years. She was also a delegate of the International Ladies Garment Workers' Union (ILGWU). After retiring, she devoted herself to her daughter and her granddaughters whom reside in Rockland County, NY.
Gladys is survived by her daughter, Gladys E. Steves, her son-in-law, Edward M. Steves, her sister, Nilda Placeres,and her granddaughters, Cristina E. Steves and Elizabeth M. Steves and nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Service will be held at Michael J. Higgins Funeral Home in New City, NY on Sunday, June 9th from 2:00 PM - 6:00 PM. A FuneralMass will be held at St. Paul’s Church on Monday, June 10th in Congers, NY at 10:00 AM.
