George M. McManus, 83, of New City passed away after a brief illness. He leaves his wife of 61 years Joan E. (Sullivan); his children Donna (Dennis) Curry of Nanuet, Patricia (Douglas) Sheahan of Pearl River, John McManus of New City, and Kevin(Jeanne) McManus of East Setauket. His grandchildren Dennis (Heather) Curry, Brendan Curry, Stephen McManus, Dr. Douglas Sheahan, Kyle Sheahan, Cassandra McManus, Christian McManus and Liam McManus. He is also survived by his numerous nieces and nephews and his younger brother Edward McManus of Monticello New York.
George was predeceased by his son Stephen M. McManus (2002), his older brother Harry McManus of Queens New York, his parents Lena (Schroeder) and Harry McManus of Monticello New York.
George was born in Monticello NY in 1933 and grew up there and in Queens NY. He graduated from Long Island City High School in 1952 and was in the United States Navy from 1952 - 1955 and was a veteran of the Korean War. June, 11, 1955 he married his wife Joan Sullivan of Queens NY at Our Lady of Mount Carmel R.C. Church.
He joined the New York City Police Department in 1956 and was the top cadet in marksmanship and academics. He served with the police department for 38 years and retired in 1994 with the rank of Lieutenant commander in charge of a detective squad. He was also a graduate from John Jay College with a degree in criminal justice. He moved his family to New City, NY in 1961.
He was a member of the West Nyack One Seniors Club, he especially enjoyed the friends he made there and the many trips he went on with the club. He was a long time member of the American Legion of New City and the Rockland County Shields.
He was an avid reader who loved nature and an "occasional" joke. He was a people person and enjoyed making new friends and sharing his repertoire of jokes with them.
The McManus family will receive family and friends on Tuesday, May 23 from 2pm - 8pm at Michael J. Higgins Funeral Home, New City. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on May 24 at 10am at St. Augustines Church. Burial will follow at St. Anthony's Cemetery, Nanuet NY.
