George William Doerre, dear husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend passed on Tuesday, April 2, 2019. Husband of Rosalie (predeceased); Father and Father-in-law of George and Barbara of Poughkeepsie, NY – with children George of Union City, New Jersey and Teresa and Richard Menaik of McLean, Virginia; of John and Deborah of Newburgh, NY – with children Cailin of Newburgh, and Mallory and James Sarcinella of Montgomery and grandchild James; and of Mark and Olivia of Lexington, KY – with children Samantha of Lexington and Richard of Lexington, and grandchild Lilly; Brother-in-law of Frances Sigillito of East Greenwich, RI, and of Lucy Comenzo (predeceased); Brother of Alice McGrath (predeceased).
George was born on July 24, 1927, to Leo and Frieda Doerre, in New York City. He attended schools in the City, and enlisted in the US Army early in 1945. Afterward, he embarked on a career as industrial mechanic, while continuing to pursuing his (then) hobby and passion for landscape painting.
On June 11, 1950, he married Rosalie Katherine Guarino, also of New York City, and they made a life for themselves and their children in the City, before moving to Nanuet fifty-six years ago.
In the early 1970’s, George attended Rockland Community College, graduating with an Associate Degree, and shortly thereafter retired to devote his full time to being an artist.
After Rosalie’s retirement, she and George were rarely apart, till her death in 2013. They would summer in New Berlin, NY at their second home, where George painted and showed his art.
George’s family will receive visitors on Friday from 8:30-9:30 am at Higgins Funeral Home in New City, with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated on Friday at 10:00 am at St. Anthony’s Church in Nanuet. Burial will be at Frederick Loescher Veterans’ Cemetery, New Hempstead, NY. Remembrances may be made to Building Homes for Heroes (www.buildinghomesforheroes.org)
