Evelyn Grace Edelson of Perth Amboy, New Jersey, 76 years old, passed away peacefully on February 7, 2022. Evelyn was a longtime resident of Perth Amboy. She was born at home attended by a midwife on September 22, 1945, in Balaoan, La Union, Philippines. She came to the United States when she was 18 years old, worked in a cosmetic factory, then enrolled to become a certified elementary school teacher. Upon her retirement from the public school, she put herself through nursing school. She rose to Nursing Supervisor at the Briarwood Care and Rehabilitation Center.
It's been said that good fences make good neighbors. But not with her. She knew the names of her neighbors in her block and how they were faring up. As she drove by them, she would ask, "how is your Mom?" Or son in the military?" In return, her neighbors watched out for her. They mowed her lawn, cleared out snow in her driveway, and protected her roadside parking spot. It seemed like Mr. Rogers' neighborhood.
Evelyn participated as a lifelong member of her church Bible Study sang in the choir as a dark bass-alto. She enjoyed cooking, driving cross-country to see her children, buying Vienna sausages for relatives in the Philippines, sending packages for the needy through her friend, a minister's wife. She's comfortable meeting strangers and turning them into friends wherever she goes. Her mission in life was to share. She lived to be there for her family. She would not only share resources, food, supplies, her time, but she would also share stories; she would share her emotional support, her presence. She never lost her gentle, caring spirit, no matter how resilient she had to become. Evelyn made a career of caring for others.
She was an avid fan of musicals like Les Miserables and The Phantom of the Opera, but her greatest joy emerged from her children. She is survived by her daughter, Stephanie Lynn Edelson and Charles Michael Edelson (Heidi Najera). Allergic to cats, Evelyn nonetheless became a loving Grandma to at least four feline grands. She would do anything for her treasured Charles and Stephanie. She is also survived by two brothers, Dr. Sylvestre Boado Almiron and Mr. Rogelio Almirol. Evelyn was adored by a crew of nieces and nephews, who she both guarded and teased fiercely. She was predeceased by three siblings, Nellie, Norma, and Edwin. Now a family of 8 is down to 2. Evelyn's spirit elevated every family gathering, and she will be missed by all who knew her.
On Saturday, February 19, the family will receive friends from 10-1:30 at Higgins Funeral Home in New City, NY. Service of Christian Burial will take place at 2 pm at New City Methodist Church in New City at 76 Congers Road.
