Neil was born and raised in the St. Thomas Aquinas Parish, Bronx, NY. He received his doctorate from Fordham University. Neil taught at Fordham Prep as a science teacher starting in 1964 and eventually served as Headmaster from 1982-1994. He didn’t like being retired, so then served as principal of Cardinal Spellman High School from 1997 - 2010. He spent over 50 years in Catholic education.
Neil is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary, his three daughters, Kathleen Simpson (Brian), Peg Sacco (Henry), Jean Marie Buckhout (Steve), and his three grandchildren, Jennifer Buckhout, Hank Sacco, and Grace Sacco.
Neil was predeceased by his parents Charles and Margaret McCarthy and his brother and sister-in-law Cormack and Mary McCarthy.
Neil was an avid traveler and enjoyed cruises, Las Vegas, and the National Parks. He loved to spoil his grandchildren and host Sunday brunch with the whole family. Neil was infamous for his sweet tooth and mischievous, sarcastic sense of humor.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Neil to the Jesuits (US East Province of the Society of Jesus, 39 East 83 Street, New York, NY 10028) or St Jude’s Children’s Hospital (501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN, 38105).
