Christine Prendergast

Christine Prendergast, age 81, of New City, New York passed away on Friday, September 8, 2023. Christine (Chris) Prendergast of New City, NY, 81-years old, passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side on September 8, 2023. She is survived by her beloved husband, Paul, daughter Micaela (Sahib) Bennett and son Thomas (Catherine) Prendergast. She is also survived by three grandchildren (Matthew, Robeson and Caitlin). She cherished time spent with family especially with her grandchildren who made her very proud.

Chris was born in San Francisco, CA to Elmer and Blanche Gallagher on October 12, 1941. Despite physical distance, she and her older sister, Sr. Toni Lynn Gallagher, maintained the closest of sisterly bonds. Chris married the love of her life, Paul, on May 1,1965. She was the heart of her family and community. Chris was an active Scout Leader and volunteered in many ways at St. Augustine’s. Her favorite role there was as a religious education teacher. She donated her time and hundreds of Thanksgiving baskets and other requests to People to People. A woman who liked to stay busy, Chris was known as the unofficial Master Gardener of the West Nyack Swim Club for more than 20 years and when others might have retired, she started a new career bringing her many creative talents to Vanderbilt Hardware as their enthusiastic paint expert. Her favorite moments were cheering on her children and grandchildren at their games, celebrating birthdays and hosting family and friends for holidays filled with her delicious home- cooked food and special kind of fun. Chris’ kind heart and indomitable spirit will be missed terribly. Her will to live and care for her family were an inspiration to all who knew her. If you knew Christine, you loved her.

The family will receive visitors at Michael J. Higgins Funeral Home in New City on October 7, 2023, from 5 to 7PM with a memorial service celebrating Chris’ life immediately following at 7PM.
