Catalino B. So, age 88, of New City, New York, peacefully passed away surrounded by family on April 17, 2024. He is survived by his wife, Adelia; his children, Andrew, Allan, Christian, Theresa and Lourdes; daughters in law Erica & Kay; sons in law Ed & Santo; and six grandchildren (Ella, Lea, Kiana, Kyle, Camille, and Karina). He was predeceased by his son David.
Catalino was born on April 20, 1935, in Manila, Philippines, as the oldest of six children. Losing his father at a young age, he naturally assumed a leadership role and recognized the importance of hard work and a good education. He graduated as valedictorian of his high school and subsequently earned an honors degree in Accounting from the University of the East.
Catalino went on to complete a master’s degree in business before serving as a professor at the University of the East, one of the largest universities in the Philippines. He also held positions as CFO of Fortune 500 companies Coca-Cola and Nabisco Brands, Phils. In 1986, he immigrated to the United States, where through hard work and dedication, he achieved the American dream, retiring as the head of accounting of Van Eck Global, a successful hedge fund in New York City.
Despite all his accomplishments, Catalino’s proudest achievement was being a father and husband. Those who knew him would describe Catalino as a man of integrity and selflessness, putting family
above all else. Ever charismatic and cheerful, he could strike up a conversation with anyone he
encountered.He welcomed new adventures and ideas and a constant desire to learn, instilling the importance of education in his children. Catalino enjoyed reading the New York Times from front to back, never skipping the crossword puzzle, watching CNN, driving (especially long road trips), and traveling the world.
Above all, Catalino was a devoted family man who always put others before himself. He lived a life of
fulfillment, enriched by resilience, laughter, and unwavering love for his family. Friends and family are invited to celebrate Catalino’s life with visitation on Friday, April 26 from 4-8 PM at Higgins Funeral Home, 321 South Main Street, New City, NY and a Funeral Mass on Saturday, April 27, at 10 AM at Saint Augustine Parish, 140 Maple Avenue, New City, NY.
