Sheila Alice (Poirier) Adzima, 75, of New Britain, wife, mother and matriarch, passed from this life to life eternal on Saturday, May 23, 2010 at the Hospital of Central Connecticut. She was born April 9, 1935 in Clinton, Massachusetts, daughter of the late Leo and Albina (Nowokunski) Poirier and grew up in Leominster, Massachusetts. She joined the United States Marine Corps just days after her eighteenth birthday. After boot camp she was assigned to Camp LeJeune as a Disbursing Clerk where she met the man that became her husband, Francis "Bob" Adzima. They were married May 22, 1954, and she was honorably discharged from the Marines since married women, at that time, were not allowed to remain on duty. The couple moved to Trumbull, Connecticut, later that year, where Sheila was a stay at home mom and raised five children. The family moved to New Britain in 1977. She worked for the May Corporation stores including GFox and Filene's from where she retired after 20 years as a retail clerk. Sheila was a communicant of St. Jerome Roman Catholic Church. Bob and Sheila were married for 56 years. In addition to her beloved husband, she is survived by her loving children Sharon Sforza and her husband Robert of Milford, Connecticut, Jeffrey Adzima and his wife Barbara of San Diego, California, Robert Adzima and his wife Pamela of Gilbertsville, Pennsylvania, Roger Adzima and his wife Kitty of Loganville, Georgia and Melissa Thomas and her husband Kevin of New Britain. She is also survived by fifteen treasured grandchildren, Ryan, Timothy, Gregory, Kathryn, Lindsay, Lucas and Christopher Adzima and Francis Robert Adzima II, Jeremy and Adam Sforza, Kyle, Devin and Terra Thomas, Nicholas and Daniel Lovett and five precious great-grandchildren, Danika, Lucien, Amanda and Zachary Adzima and Steven Lovett. She also leaves her brother Pastor Leo J. Poirier Jr. and his wife Lois of Stoneham, Massachusetts and her sister Janice Mager and her husband Alan of Gainesville, Virginia.
Funeral services will begin on Wednesday May 26, 2010 at 11AM from the New Britain Memorial-Donald D. Sagarino Funeral Home, 444 Farmington Avenue, New Britain, followed by the Liturgy of Christian Burial 12 NOON in St. Jerome Roman Catholic Church, 1010 Slater Road, New Britain, with full military honors following the church services. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Visiting hours at the funeral home are Tuesday (TODAY) May 25, 2010, 2-4PM and 6-8PM.
