Peter Alexander Zera, 42, of Southington, CT, passed away on December 13, 2024, at home. Born September 19, 1982 in New Britain to Jane and Richard Zera, Peter is survived by his parents; his sister Amy Zera Freed and her husband James Freed of Windsor, and their children, James Indigo and Katalina Opal; and many cousins, including Maryann Koprek of Farmington and her children Phoenix and David.
For nearly 6 years, Peter was married to the love of his life, Elissa (Maillet) whom he met while serving side by side as EMTs for Hunter’s Ambulance in the central Connecticut area. In 2022, Samuel Alexander was born to them. Peter considered his young family to be his greatest achievement. Playing with his son quickly became Peter’s favorite past time, surpassing even his enjoyment of political conversation, and yard work—though he continued to love adventuring with his niece and nephew.
Peter’s endearing wit and genuine nature won him many friends, though he was often reserved and unassuming. According to his closest friends and colleagues, Peter was endlessly selfless, motivated, methodical, meticulous, and gave maximum effort in all of his endeavors. As an EMT of ten years, he faithfully made sure that his truck was clean and stocked, that the bays were swept and tidy, and that his coworkers had hot food on the holidays and cold water on the hottest days of the year. His partners knew that he had their backs. A champion of several causes, Peter spread awareness for epilepsy, established mental health resources for EMS, and improved cooperation between towns and sectors of first responders, among other important issues. He made his passion his career when he became the national union representative for the International Association of EMTs and Paramedics. Available to his union members 24/7, Peter counted it a privilege when anyone asked for his help. There was no limit to the time he would spend on those who confided in him.
Peter never took the time he had for granted, nor the people in his life. He truly cared about everyone he came across and showed his care with generous gifts, respect, and acts of service. He was diligent and had so much more that he planned to accomplish for us all. He is sorely missed.
Calling Hours will be held on Friday January 3, 2025 from 4PM-7PM. Interment will be private at the request of the family
