Leo D. Giattino, 90, of Newington, CT, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 21, 2017 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Lee (DiSabato) Giattino. They shared 68 happy years together.
Leo was born in New Britain, CT, the son of Pasqua and Luca Giattino. He received an honorable discharge from the United States Army, where he served as a Sargent in the 65th Signal Battalion. After the army, he spent many years working at Atlantic Tool, Eastern Tool and Die, and Pratt & Whitney Aircraft.
He was a member of the BPOE, the American Legion, and the Marconi Club. He will be remembered for his great love of his family, especially time spent at his cottages in Old Lyme, his infectious smile and knowledge of how to fix almost anything. He loved a good game of cards with his family and especially his friends at the Senior Center in New Britain. He also loved the time he spent at his winter home in Naples, FL for 30 years after his retirement.
He is survived by his wife, Lee; his sister, Ann Tarca; his daughters Deborah Jaksina and MaryAnn Diorio and her husband Joseph Diorio, Jr.; his grandchildren, Jennifer Kumnick and her husband Stephen, Joseph Diorio and his wife Nicole, Stephanie Jaksina, Jeffrey Jaksina and his fiancé Sarah Melley, and Nicholas Diorio; and his great-granddaughters, Avery Kumnick, Alexandra Kumnick, and Jacqueline Diorio; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; Pasqua and Luca Giattino and his sisters; Mary Perrata and Angie McKay.
The funeral service will begin on Friday, May 26, 2017 at 9 a.m. at New Britain Memorial Donald D. Sagarino Funeral Home, 444 Farmington Ave., New Britain followed by his funeral liturgy at 10 a.m. at Church of the Holy Spirit, 183 Church St., Newington. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Mary Cemetery, New Britain, CT. Calling hours will be on Thursday, May 25, 2017 from 4 p. m. to 7 p. m. at the funeral home.
Memorial donations may be made to the Hartford Hospital Cardiology Infusion Center or the American Diabetes Association.
