Dorothy is also survived by grandsons Matthew Greer, Kenneth Greer, Joseph Ahlstrin, Raynor Ahlstrin-Muniec and great grandson Ethayn Greer.
Dorothy was born December 26, 1929, in Hartford CT. She was a graduate of Hartford Public High School in 1947 and continued her education at St. Francis School of Nursing, graduating in 1950. Dorothy pursued her career as a registered nurse after marriage in October 1950 and the subsequent move to West Hartford in 1951 where Raymond was an officer of the West Hartford Police Department. She worked for many years as Delivery Room Supervisor at St. Francis Hospital. Eventually Dorothy became nurse and office manager in an OB/GYN practice, retiring in 1989 to care for her husband during his battle with terminal cancer. Not taking to retirement life, Dorothy returned to the workforce in 1991 as a substitute nurse for the Wethersfield and Newington school systems and enjoyed her work with the students until age 81.
Dorothy was an avid knitter, reader, and crossword puzzle enthusiast. She was an active member of the West Hartford United Methodist Church, singing in the choir and making items for many annual church craft fairs. In later life she enjoyed going to brunch with her nurse buddies and watching mysteries and westerns on the television.
Dorothy is remembered by friends and neighbors as strong willed, smart, and feisty. She was proud of her family and was always willing to share a story of her career or childhood growing up in Hartford. Dorothy was never discouraged by life’s challenges.
The family would like to thank Visiting Angels and the nursing staff of St. Francis Hospital for the excellent care she received. They would also like to thank Ted, Barbara, and JR for being such thoughtful neighbors to Dorothy throughout the years.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Dorothy to the Shriners Hospital for Children or to the Fidelco Guide Dog Association. No funeral or memorial services are immediately planned. The family will notify loved ones in the future when services are scheduled.
