Alice was born on November 12, 1933 in Palmer, MA. , a daughter of the late Joseph E. and Alice (King) Merceri. She was the loving wife of the late Robert F. Ahern Sr. and proud mother to daughters Sharon Crandall and her husband David of Southington, Colleen Piersanti and her husband Robert of Springfield, MA., Tracy Ahern of Bristol, and son, Robert Ahern Jr. and his wife Stacey of Kensington, brother Peter R. Merceri and wife Virginia. She was a proud and loving grandmother to 8 grandchildren; Carrie, Jill, Kelly, Scott, Jennifer, Robert F. III, Chad, Craig and adoring G.G. to 12 great grandchildren, and aunt to many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and her husband, Alice is predeceased by her son Ronald R. Ahern, her sister Shirley Brown, and her brother Joseph “Sonny” Merceri.
Alice and Robert raised their family in New Britain. Alice was an attentive, loving wife and mom. Her family and home were everything to her. After her children were grown, she worked many years including for Hit or Miss Clothing and then being the cook and kitchen coordinator at a rest home until retiring. She was known by family and friends for being a great cook and baker, especially for her homemade favorites: banana bread, lasagna, clam chowder and stuffed cabbage. Throughout her life, she enjoyed collecting hobnail milk glass, rooster figurines, Boyd’s Bears and Snowbabies. She enjoyed growing and receiving flowers, feeding-housing and watching wild birds and wildlife. She enjoyed a good cup of hot coffee, a sweet treat, a good lobster roll and strawberry shortcake, soaking up the sun, getting her hair done, a nice automobile, she had an eye for style, and she loved family cookouts, Holidays and Sunday dinners. Over the years when possible she enjoyed going to Jai Alai matches, the casino for slots, going on family trips, weekends away, and all day shopping adventures. Her favorite thing was spending time with her family. Her love and care for us was immeasurable and we can only hope she felt that love and care returned. We will miss you more than words can express.
