Mary Lou was born on December 7, 1927 in San Antonio, TX to Erhard John Neuner and Anna Louise Bass. She died on April 27, 2016 at the age of 88. She had one brother, Jack Anthony Neuner Sr. deceased. She is survived by her friend and 14-year companion, Vernon Seiler and her three children Karen Nowlin and husband, Billy of New Braunfels, Larry Broome and wife, Lilia of League City, TX and Beverly Mitchell of Perryton, TX. Mary Lou had 9 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
She attended St. Mary’s High School in downtown San Antonio until her Junior year when the family moved to Texas City where she graduated from Central High School in 1945. After graduation she worked as a secretary at the Longhorn Tin Smelter in Texas City, the only tin smelter in the Western Hemisphere at that time to help with the WWII need for more metal.
She married Roice Wayne Broome on February 26, 1949 who proceeded her in death in 1991. Roice and Mary Lou made their home in La Marque/Texas City. She was a devout Catholic and attended Queen of Peace Catholic Church in La Marque, TX where she served as the Queen of Peace school’s secretary. She instilled in her children Christian values which they have passed on to their children and grandchildren.
Mary Lou and Roice loved playing cards especially bridge, bowling, and dancing. She often commented that she would never find a better dance partner than Roice. She worked for the nuclear ship Savanah as shore staff in Galveston. She worked for and later retired from TRW Mission Space Technology Sector and assisted with astronaut training at NASA. They had many great friends on the Gulf Coast but decided to retire in New Braunfels where they had spent wonderful, relaxing vacations in the past.
Mary Lou and Roice moved to New Braunfels in June 1981 where they enjoyed living on the Guadalupe River. She and Roice attended Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church of New Braunfels. She was a member of the Newcomer’s club, Eagle Auxiliary (currently), Elks Auxiliary, Knights of Columbus Auxiliary, and Starlight Dance Club. She loved to read and was an avid card and domino player. She volunteered for Meals on Wheels, Red Cross, SOS food bank and served as a Eucharistic Minister to the homebound for her church. She served on the New Braunfels Senior Citizen board and currently was a member of the Silver Center in Seguin. Mary Lou loved to visit the casinos and especially enjoyed playing the slots.
After her husband’s death she taught herself to play Skat, a German card game. She entered Skat tournaments and often won. Mary Lou felt very blessed by her family and especially loved visiting with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. In her last days she was lovingly cared for by her friend, Vernon Seiler and her family. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
A Visitation will be held at Zoeller Funeral Home on Monday, May 2, 2016 from 6-9:00pm; with the Rosary recited at 7:00pm. The funeral Mass will be held at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church on Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at 10:00am. Interment will follow at Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Sts. Peter and Paul Women’s ACTS Ministry or to the American Cancer Society.
