Karen was first and foremost an educator. She spent her entire adult life teaching the children of New Braunfels. Immediately after receiving her BA in Education from Southwest Texas State University in 1968, she became a teacher in the New Braunfels Independent School District. Originally at NB Middle school, then at Oak Run Middle School, she taught generations of children in a variety of subjects including language arts, computer literacy, and mathematics. After 43 years teaching, Karen retired in 2011 to spend more time with her family but quickly came back as a part time substitute. Her dedication to educating tomorrow’s generation was honored recently when the New Braunfels Independent School District presented her with the Silver Unicorn award for her dedication.
The anguish caused by her sudden departure will, with time, fade somewhat leaving only the the lessons she taught all of us in and out of the classroom through her compassion, humor, and dedication.
A Memorial service will be held at the Oakwood Baptist Church in New Braunfels, TX on July 22 at 2 pm. All are invited to attend.
