Joel Henry Griffin, 91 years and 8 days passed away in New Braunfels, April 4, 2013. Joel was born in San Marcos, Texas on March 27, 1922; he grew up in Staples and Nixon, TX. He graduated from Nixon High School in 1938 and Southwest State Teachers College (now Texas State) in 1942.
Joel leaves behind his daughter Cathy Griffin Calnan of New Braunfels, TX and his sons Jay Griffin of Taylor, TX and Lee Griffin of Llano, TX. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Terri Dehlin, Beth Thomason, Jody Griffin and wife Laura Griffin, Jason Griffin and wife Shauna Griffin, J.J. Griffin and wife Kim Griffin, and Anne Boon and husband Garrett Boon. He is also survived by his great -grandchildren Bryce Dehlin, Kayleigh Griffin, Hayden Griffin, Hannah Griffin and Samuel Boon. And his brothers Dr. Bedford Griffin and family of Borger, TX and Dr. Warren Griffin and family of San Angelo, TX. He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years and 10 months, Maggie Turner Griffin. Also proceeded in death by his parents William Henry Griffin and Florence Lowman Griffin, his son-in-law Gary S. Calnan and his grandson-in-law Dale A. Dehlin.
Joel was commissioned an Ensign in the U.S. Navy Reserve in May 1943. He served aboard LST 123 from August 1943 until July 1945. After World War II he worked for Anderson Clayton in El Paso, TX for several years. Upon returning to Houston he worked for W.H. Curtin Company until 1972. At that time he went to work for the Texas A&M University extension service teaching business. In 1977 he went to work for Fluor Engineering in Houston and stayed there until retirement in 1985. He and Maggie enjoyed retirement with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren for many years. In 1999, he and Maggie moved to New Braunfels, TX where they lived out there years surrounded by family.
The family would like to send a special thank you to Liz Molina and Joyce Del Rio for all the love and attention they gave to Joel and Maggie for the last four and half years. We also extend our thanks to Hope Hospice for everything they guided us through in the past 12 months.
A memorial service will be held at Christ Presbyterian Church 1620 Common Street, New Braunfels, TX 78130 at 12:30 pm, Saturday, May 4th.
