She was born in Springfield, Ohio, on December 1, 1930 to Ruth Richison Miller and Roy Miller. She was the older sister to her brother, Joe. Jane moved several times as a child, from Ohio to Indiana, North Carolina and back to Indiana. She graduated in 1948 from Shortridge High School in Indianapolis and began college at Butler University. It was at Butler where she met and eventually married her husband, Harry Foight Henderson, of Pittsburgh, PA. Jane was proud to be a Pi Phi Sorority member while at Butler, and she graduated with her Bachelor’s Degree in Home Economics Education in 1952.
Jane and Harry raised a busy family of four children while moving from Indiana to Illinois, Missouri to Michigan, and finally settling in Austin, TX. Jane began her teaching career in Michigan, but found her perfect job in Austin ISD, teaching Home Economics and Family Living in the Teenage Parent Program. She was remembered by students and staff as being loving and generously giving herself to those in need.
Jane will be remembered for her volunteerism as she spent many hours at her church and in every community where she lived. In 1996 she retired to Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, where she was very active in Altrusa, serving as a Charter member and President of the Hot Springs Village Altrusa. She also was an active member of the local AAUW Chapter and Altar Guild at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in the Village.
Jane and Harry loved to travel, often taking extended summer trips throughout the U.S. Many stories are still shared in the family of their cross-country adventures (and misadventures!) They were able to visit every state but Alaska in their travels.
Jane was preceded in death by her loving husband of 63 years, Harry and her brother, Joe. She is survived by her four children Robert (Debbye) Henderson of Leawood, KS; Margaret (Michael) McKinley of Milford, MI; David (Lisa) Henderson of Bulverde, TX; and Susan (Charles) Russo of Houston, TX. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
