James William Voss "Pop'' beloved husband, father and grandfather and dearly loved friend passed away at the age of 86 in New Braunfels, Texas. He went to be with the Lord on Monday, April 24th at home surrounded by his family. He was born in New Braunfels, TX on January 2, 1937 to Bianka (Schwab) and Rudolph Voss. He was the eldest of five children.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents and brother Robert Anthony. He is survived by his loving and caring wife of 61 years, Barbara (Balmos) Voss, two sons, Joel James (Liz) and Warren William (Michelle), eight grandchildren, one stepgranddaughter, five step-great grandchildren, surviving siblings Diana Moltz, Bernadine (Harry) Grothues, and Mary (Barry) Irwin, sisters-in-law Yoshiko Balmos and Helen Voss, brothers-in-laws Daniel (Marjorie) Balmos, Thomas (Janice) Balmos, and Gene Foerster plus many dearly loved nephews and nieces.
Jim graduated from Navarro High School in 1955. He attended Texas Lutheran College in Seguin for a semester and found he was not meant for the classroom. He found his dream job with the Texas Wildlife Program. His passion and heart had always been with the outdoors so his job never felt like work to him. Jim retired June 30, 2005 after graciously serving 33 years with the Texas Wildlife Program. He was considered one of the best dedicated trappers in the business. Upon retirement, he continued his journey as a private trapper for Bill Moody Ranch in Kinney and Val Verde counties for another ten years. He was highly respected and it showed through commendations and awards received during his tenure with the Texas Wildlife Program.
Jim had been an active parishioner in St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church parish in Brackettville, TX for over 40 years prior to moving to New Braunfels. Jim and Barbara received the Lumen Gentium Award from the Archdiocese of San Antonio in 2018. This award was presented to laypersons in each parish who demonstrated faithfulness and dedication to ministry.
Jim was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus Council #8223. He loved helping with the annual fish fries and assisted wherever he could. He transferred to the Knights of Columbus Council #4183 upon moving to New Braunfels.
Jim and Barbara opened their doors to numerous foster children and it was very rewarding. Jim loved taking one along with him during the summer months on his trapping route. He also spent many hours teaching them math, how to ride horses and hunt.
He loved to reminisce about the good old days. Jim leaves behind a multitude of memories. His storytelling was shared with anyone who would listen to the many tales of his full, well-lived and action-packed life. In his younger years, he enjoyed baseball, bowling, stock shows, rodeos, deer hunting and sausage making. Later in life he enjoyed watching sports, old western movies and reruns.
Rest in peace Pop. We will miss you.
