Ione Daisy Sykes went home to be with the Lord on September 24, 2015 at the age of 100. She was born on May 4, 1915 in Princeton, British Columbia in Canada. Her parents were Lena Mary Klassen and Claude Duvall. She lived in many places in the United States spending her early years in Washington, most of her life in California, and finally in New Braunfels, Texas when she passed away. She worked a wide variety of jobs throughout her life but one she was most proud of was being a one of the women who stepped in to do the hard work in the San Francisco shipyards during World War II. She was a part of the “Rosie the Riveter” movement, working as a welder because she was small enough to fit into many of the tight spaces during construction of a ship. She enjoyed handwork, and created beautiful pieces of embroidery, crochet and knitting.
She is survived by her two daughters, Claudena Johnson and Donna Kohlman, four grandchildren, Phillip Davies and his wife Kristina, Tamara McPherson and her husband Danny; Renee Garner; Kevin Kohlman and his wife Karen. She has seven great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Many thanks to the caring staff at Kirkwood Manor and the kind support from Hope Hospice.
A service will be held at New Braunfels Bible Church on Saturday, October 3 at 11:00 AM. She will be buried at Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park at 1:30pm. A donation in her memory to Options for Life at optionsforlifenb.org would be appreciated, or flowers may be sent to New Braunfels Bible Church, 652 TX-337 Loop, New Braunfels, TX 78130.
