Reverend Harold G. Sassman, 80 years old, passed away on August 16, 2018 at Christus Santa Rosa in New Braunfels, Tx. Harold was born September 5, 1937, in Schertz, Texas; the only child of Robert A. and Leona V. Sassman. In 1955, having just graduated from Edison High School in San Antonio, Texas, Harold felt God calling him to the ordained ministry. He answered his call to ministry at Mt. Wesley. He attended Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas and then Perkins School of Theology, SMU, in Dallas, Texas. During this time (1961) he met and married Nancy Kay Stephenson of Sinton, Texas. He graduated in 1962 and began his journey – serving many congregations in the Southwest Texas United Methodist Conference. Harold’s churches he served: Lampasas Circuit (four churches) in Kerrville District while a senior in Perkins Seminary 1961-1962; Veribest-Wall in San Angelo District 1962-1963; Memorial UMC in Austin (associate pastor) 1963-1965; Schulenburg-Freyburg 1965-1967; Christ Church, Kingsville and Banquete UMC 1967-1972; First UMC, Pearsall 1972-1976; First UMC, Kerrville 1976-1982; Tarrytown UMC, Austin 1982-1988; Coker UMC, San Antonio 1988-1995; San Antonio District Superintendent 1995-2002; and New Braunfels UMC (associate pastor) 2002-2016.
Harold is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Nancy; and 3 children: David Sassman, Lee Ann Blackmon, Terri Kay Hartman and husband, Brad Hartman; 4 grandchildren: Lilly Kay Blackmon, Noah David Blackmon, Braden Harold Hartman, and Aaron Wade Hartman. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, August 25, 2018 at 10:00 am at First United Methodist Church of New Braunfels. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be given to the Harold G.
