Gene was born in Boone, NC on August 15, 1931, to PM Rutherford, Jr. and Ruth Rutherford. He was an Eagle Scout, and along with his dad, was an adult volunteer scout leader helping to create the Golden Acorn leadership program for the Circle Ten Council in Dallas. He was an adult instructor at the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico during the 60s. He attended the University of Texas at Austin.
Gene was an architect and builder his entire career and his work remains present all around New Braunfels, San Antonio and Dallas. Some of his projects include The T Bar M Conference Center, T Bar M Townhomes, the Chase Bank building, Comal Country Tax Appraisal Building, Bill Maher State Farm office, New Braunfels Utilities building on the square, and the “Herald-Zeitung building, along with numerous others.
Survivors include his sons David Rutherford and wife Susan, Rick Rutherford and wife Mary, and Robert Rutherford and wife Rene, his brother Paris Milton Rutherford III and wife Lynne. He was proceeded in death by the love of his life, Claribel Rutherford, his wife of 62 years, and his son Gary. He had nine grandchildren, and 18 great grandchildren.
Visitation is Saturday, February 24, 2018, at Zoeller Funeral Home at 11:00 AM with services at Noon. Interment at 2:00 p.m. at the Hill Country Memorial Gardens in New Braunfels.
Many people took care of Gene during the last four years of his life and our family will be forever grateful for every act of kindness, big or small.
