Gene E. Monroe, 69, of New Braunfels, passed away on Thursday, September 6, 2012 at the Christus Santa Rosa Hospital in New Braunfels. He was born in Bismarck, North Dakota to Earl Monroe and Mary (Burck) Monroe on April 26, 1943. Gene was raised in Wilton, North Dakota and graduated from Wilton High School. After High School he attended Valley City Community College for two years and worked as a truck driver. Gene moved to Texas in the early seventies and began his career in the Overhead Door Business working in sales and installation. He was also a reserve Police Officer for the City of Bedford, Texas. He retired from the overhead door business in 2000 after 40 plus years of service. He enjoyed many favorite pastime activities including working with tractors, woodworking, and outdoor cooking. He also participated in many chili cook-offs since 1986 and was known by many as a “Master Outdoor Chef”. He was an active member of Peace Lutheran Church New Braunfels.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon Monroe; daughters, Traci D. Lewis, Shelli G. Swift and husband Greg, and Vicki B. Matherly and husband Tom; son, Michael G. Monroe; step-children, Dawn J. Abbott and husband Tom, Shawn L. Hudson and husband Ken, and Craig E. Christopherson; mother-in-law, Lillian Matoon; brothers, Jerry Monroe and wife Jean and Burel Monroe and wife Marilyn; sisters, Jane Watkins, Bonnie Diechert, Judy Ryder and husband Joe and Jill Monroe; grandchildren, Leighann, Holli, Mallori, Casey, Chase, Rachel, Jonathan, Andrew, Caitlin, and Thomas; great-grandchildren, Nathan, Bethani, and Aubri. He was preceded in death by his parents Earl and Mary Monroe.
A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, September 11, 2012 at Peace Lutheran Church in New Braunfels with Pastor Gary Lange officiating. Memorial Contributions may be given to Peace Lutheran Church or to The Wounded Warrior Project.
