Elaine was born in Providence, Rhode Island to Daniel and Madeline Howland on July 1, 1933. Her family later moved to Port Washington, New York, where she grew up. She attended St. Dominic’s High School in Oyster Bay, New York. Elaine entered the order of the Sisters of St. Dominic on August 4th 1952 at Queen of the Rosary chapel in Amityville, New York; she left the order April 1958, but always remained dedicated to the Scared Heart. Elaine went on to work with children, and worked many years as a teacher in Brooklyn, New York and later in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. She was loved by her many students and co-workers during her life that she dedicated to teaching.
In June 1964 she married Vincent McNamara at Immaculate Conception Church, Jamaica, New York. Elaine and Vin, spent their time together, traveling and camping all over the United States and Canada. Some of her favorite trips were to San Francisco, Niagara Falls and Maine. Elaine enjoyed sports, and was a lifetime fan of the Boston Red Sox, the New England Patriots and Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football. She participated in every sport she could; especially golf. Elaine loved the outdoors and enjoyed swimming and camping. She also had an appreciation for the Arts and loved listening to all types of music, and never missed a good movie.
Although Elaine didn’t have children of her own, she never forgot a birthday, baptism, wedding or special occasion for her many nieces and nephews. One could always count on a card or letter from her on any special day. She enjoyed the privilege of watching her nieces and nephews and their families grow-up.
Elaine is preceded in death by her parents, Daniel and Madeline Howland and her brother Raymond Howland.
Elaine is survived by her sister Barbara Peters of San Antonio, Texas and her nieces, nephews and their families.
Elaine will be laid to rest with her parents at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, West Barnstable, MA.
