William Lyle Lewis

Lyle was born the middle child of James Eugene and Gettie Lewis in Kingsport, Tennessee on June 14, 1942. He graduated from Havelock High School in 1960 and joined the Air Force soon after. His work as a military electronics technician set the stage for his lifelong passion of all things technological and electronic.

Lyle met his bride Barbara Ann in December 1966 and they were married on July 2, 1967. Lyle’s early post-Air Force endeavors included successfully combining his love of cars with his entrepreneurial spirit as the owner-operator of a Gulf Service Station and serving for years as a counsellor with at-risk youth.

In 1975, Lyle and Barbara returned to Havelock and welcomed daughter Kimberly, the first of their three children. Will and Stanley followed in quick succession, and Lyle’s heart was full.

Lyle went to work at NARF in 1977 and spent 30 honorable years in service to the fleet.

As far as Lyle was concerned, there was no project too daunting to tackle. Many hours of his life were spent tinkering with this circuit board or rebuilding that machine, country music playing on the shop radio and a steady stream of friends and family dropping by to see what he had gotten himself into this time.

Lyle delighted in sharing his knowledge with others and was especially skilled at finding ways to connect with young people. From Boy Scout leader to Lake Waccamaw Boy’s Home counsellor, high school electronics teacher to Harry Potter-loving grandpa, Lyle’s limitless curiosity and desire to learn new things allowed him to forge relationships with many different people in many types of ways.

Although Lyle was known as a lot of things – Veteran, Freemason, Hot-Rodder, logistician, teacher of life, avid outdoorsman, debater of ideas, fixer of everything - his most cherished role was that of family man. Lyle loved his family deeply and unfailingly and never missed an opportunity to express that love. His wife, children, and grandchildren were the greatest joys of his life.

Lyle is survived by his wife of 55 years, Barbara Ann; their children - daughter Kimberly and husband Chris Mallady, son William Lyle Jr. and wife Reine, and son Stanley and partner Fred Rice; grandchildren Alex, Marina, Penelope, Samantha, and Josh; and brother Deamous and wife Margaret.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Lyle’s honor to the Shriners Hospitals for Children.

A celebration of life will be held on Monday, August 15, 2022 at 2:00pm at the Havelock Tourist and Event Center. All are welcome to attend. In honor of Lyle’s vibe, attire is “come as you are.”

The family will not be holding a reception or receiving visitors after the ceremony and requests your consideration during this difficult time.
