He was a loving husband, father and grandfather as well as an active member of his community. He was born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina on November 24, 1922 but lived most of his life in New Bern.
William served in the Army from August of 1946 until August of 1948. He worked for the Naval Air Rework Facility for over 30 years. He was very active in his church, Neuse Forest Presbyterian, serving as a deacon, an elder and a Sunday school teacher. In addition, he was a Mason where he was a Past Master of Grantham Lodge, receiving the York Rite Order of the Purple Cross. He was also involved in the Scottish Rite, the Shriners , Amaranth, and a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Vita Grantham Chapter where he served as a Past Worthy Patron.
William is predeceased by his parents, Ocie and Eula Hale and his grandson, Brent Garmon.
He is survived by his wife of almost 69 years, Jenny Crisp Hale; and his daughters, Gloria Hughes and husband Joe of New Bern, Ann Thornton and husband Craig of New Bern, Margaret Pritchett and husband Dan of New Bern, and Linda Jones and husband Scott of Camden, NC; and his son, David Hale and wife Carol of New Bern. William was blessed with seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. In addition, his brother, Earl Rudolph Hale; his sister, Vivian Pressley and his sister, Betty Hamilton; and his brother, Glenn Hale, survive him.
After his retirement from NARF, he enjoyed gardening, camping, visiting historical sites, playing Santa Claus at the mall and spending time with his family. His greatest passion in life was his family. He took pride and was instrumental in his children graduating from college and becoming contributing members of their communities.
Funeral services will be held at Neuse Forest Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 5 with the Reverend Jeff Sockwell officiating. Preceding the service, the family will receive visitors at 10 a.m. at the church. Internment with Masonic rites will be at Greenleaf Memorial Park following the service.
