She is predeceased by her parents and sisters, Frances P. Muth and Phyllis P. Weeks. She is also predeceased by her loving husband of 66 years, Walter E. Masterson III who was a Major League baseball player for 16 years with the Washington Senators and Boston Red Soxs.
While normally an elegant and quiet lady, when it came to her family she was not afraid to tell even baseball great Ted Williams with his salty language, “You are out of here!” Ted eventually came back to her house with a dozen roses and a box of chocolates. Only then was he allowed back in her house.
She went from being a barefooted Southern farm girl to lunching with the Washington Senators baseball wives at The Brown Derby Restaurant in Los Angeles, CA. Virginia retired from the Civil Service, NIMH as a private secretary to Dr. I. Shakow in Bethesda, MD. She was a member of the Republican Women’s Club of New Bern and a volunteer at St. Paul Catholic School.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Patricia Masterson Elliott and husband, Craig of Oriental, NC and Walter E. Masterson IV of Houston, TX. Additionally, Virginia is survived by grandchildren: Tiffany Dixon of Texas, Brendan Masterson and wife, Stephanie of Springbrook TWP, PA, Frances M. Holmes and husband, Eric of Arlington, Mass., K. Kelly Godwin of Waialua, HI and Virginia M. Cooper and husband, Jason of Pooler, GA; great grandsons, John Masterson Dixon, Trevor Dixon, Tyler Dixon, Logan Masterson, Liam Masterson, Camilla Holmes, Jackson C. Cooper; sister, Betty L. Curtis; niece, Debbie Curtis of Sedona, AZ and nephews, William Culler of Ashburn, VA, Stephen Spindler and Lee Weeks.
A funeral mass will be held Saturday, October 6, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul Catholic Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at St. Joseph Cemetery.
