Virginia Allen

She was born May 7, 1931 on Ocracoke Island where she attended school and worked with her family until she moved to Oriental where she met Owen. They later moved to New Bern and raised their 8 children. She was the daughter of Lemmie and Sara Jane Gilgo from Portsmouth Island. Her mother is buried near the base of the Ocracoke Lighthouse.

Mrs. Allen was a local officer and an employee for 30 years with the Salvation Army New Bern, NC Corps. She was a Girl Guard Leader, Home League Officer and was presented the Silver Star Mother Award for having 2 of her children become Salvation Army Officers.

Also to meet her in her heavenly home was her sisters, Sara Lupton and Mary Rosiland and her brother Ronald Linwood Gilgo.

Mrs. Allen is survived by her children, their wives and their children: Owen Jr. (Shirley Gonzales) and Christopher (Jackie), John Clifton (Shirley Riggs) Cindy and Caroline. Lemmie Lee and John McDermid, Zeb Avon (Marie Snell) and Elizabeth (Jerry Wooten), John Thomas, Emily, Gary Douglas (Tina Weldon) and Gary Jr. (Brandy), Lorina, Eva Louise (Frank Haynes), Franklin and Shannon (Luke Viglianco), Virginia Darlene, Delia Lynn (Paul Creech) and Margaret (Charles White), Ian Scott.

Great grandchildren, Jacob, Wyatt, D’Anna, Tamia, Breydon, Christopher, Bryson, Trey, Hunter, Madison, Kylie, Kolby, Kaitlyn, Gabe, Gavin, Sam, Cooper, Parker and Devon.

Visitation will be at Cotten Funeral Home Chapel in New Bern from 7 to 8:30 pm Tuesday, February 2, 2016. Graveside services will be held 11 am on Wednesday, February 3, 2016 at Greenleaf Memorial Park.
