Stephan won the National Merit Scholarship in 1958 and achieved his AB in English at Harvard University in 1963. He continued his education and received his Ph.D. in English from John Hopkins University in 1968. Stephan obtained a Fulbright Fellowship at the University of Edinburgh in 1967-1968. Before retiring, Stephan taught English at the College of Staten Island, Rochester Institute of Technology, Staten Island Community College, New York University, Essex Community College in Baltimore, MD, and John Hopkins University. During his career, Stephan published various articles in his specialties of Chaucer and Dante.
Starting at Harvard University he developed a life-long love of the sport of fencing. Stephan fenced epee individually, on teams, became a certified coach (Prevost), and coached at several local high schools and colleges. He started the Staten Island Fencing Club in 1979. He served on the Board of the United States Fencing Association, (now USA Fencing), for several years. In 1995-2016, Stephan was Co-Chairman of the USA Fencing Hall of Fame and received the USA Fencing Service Award for this work.
In 1998 Stephan started Swordplay Books, a small press specializing in books for fencers.
He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Barbara Khinoy; sister, Diana Reed (Peter); and many family and friends who loved him dearly.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Ethel Khinoy.
