Shirley E. Goodman, age 92, passed away on June 2 at CarolinaEast Medical Center, New Bern, NC. Born in Fisherville, Ontario, Canada on July 27, 1921 she was the daughter of American parents Chester M. Eisaman and Helen Shively Eisaman. She graduated from Meadville High School, heading her class in commercial studies. Upon graduation, she worked for Talon, Inc. until the start of World War II, when she went to Frazer Brace, a defense contractor.
Shirley married her high school boyfriend, Harry Goodman, on August 15, 1942. They would’ve celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary this August. During World War II she worked as secretary to the alumni director at Allegheny College while Harry was overseas in the U.S. Army. Upon his return, they stayed in Meadville for him to finish at Allegheny and then moved to Ann Arbor, MI for graduate school in 1948. They moved to Cleveland where their children were born. In 1961, they moved to Erie, PA and in 1984 they retired to New Bern where she worked as a secretary for the director of the New Bern Historical Society.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Chester M. and Helen S. Eisaman and a brother Chester M. Eisaman, Jr. She is survived by her husband Harry K. Goodman, a son Edward (Ted) C. Goodman, and a daughter Helen J. Goodman and her fiancé Bill Reight.
Shirley was an avid reader, embroiderer, and a wonderful correspondent with family and friends. She was a loving wife and mother. Always enthusiastic, caring, supportive and generous, she will be deeply missed by the family and friends who knew and loved her.
Visitation with family in New Bern will take place at Cotten Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 4, from 6pm to 8pm. A service will take place at a later date in East Springfield, PA.
