On Saturday, 13 February 2021, Robert Edward Cole was interned at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church in Havelock, North Carolina at the age of 83. He is preceded into his Heavenly home by his son, Frank Cole, and his parents, Russell and Mildred Cole. Those who will continue the family journey in this life are his wife of nearly 60 years, Enid, their children Gary, Raymond & wife Tammy, Richard & wife Margaret, and Cynthia Cole; and his brother Russell Cole and sister Diane Cole. He was the proud grandfather to 14 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
He leaves a legacy of service to God, Country, and the Community. He was a proud member of St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church for nearly 56 years, serving as its Senior Warden for nearly 20 years. Most importantly his love for God gave witness to several Priest and Deacons who would serve across the nation. One such person is John Frazier who officiated the Internment Ceremony.
He is a highly decorated Marine of 30 years, retiring as a Captain in 1985. But his Marine Corps love was serving as a Flight Engineer in VMGR-252 on the C-130 Hercules. He served three tours in Viet Nam, and in the Cuban Missile and Dominican Republic Crises in the 60’s. He continued to serve his country working at the Naval Aviation Depot on MCAS Cherry Point for five more years. He was also a member of the Marine Corps Air Transport Association since 1990.
His community service earned recognition from the City of Havelock. Yet near and dear to his heart was his service to the Boy Scouts of America Troop 272 and Havelock Chili Festival for several years.
If what we are is God’s gift to us, and what we become, our gift to God; then the Good Lord is pleased to call him home. Semper Fi Marine!
A Celebration of life will be open to those who knew Bob early summer 2021.
Arrangements are held by Cotten Funeral Home and Crematory.
