Richard was born on May 30, 1939, in McCook, Nebraska to John and Tillie (Zimmerman) Zerr. He was married to Betty, where they resided in New Bern for 50 years.
Richard had a passion for old cars, loved to listen to jazz and was an avid history buff. He was known for his kind heart, soft smile and compassionate spirit.
Richard served in the Coast Guard and worked for Civil Service at Cherry Point for over 20 years.
Richard was preceded in death by his beloved wife Betty; his father John and mother Tillie; sister Vickie; sister-in-law Marge and brother-in-law Robert Gengler. He is survived by his brothers, Francis and Robert, many nieces and nephews and a large extended family.
