Dick was born on August 14th, 1938 to Madison Bergen Young and Florence Helen Highlands in Franklin, Ohio. He grew up in Ohio, served 23 years in the United States Marine Corps and later retired from the Naval Aviation Depot, Cherry Point, North Carolina in 1996. Dick was an Honorary Life member and Past Grand Knight of Mgsr. Frank J Howard Council #6648 in Havelock, and a 4th Degree member of Fr. Kenneth I Parker Assembly #1820 in New Bern. He was also a life member in the Cherry Point Detachment #1067 of the Marine Corps League. Some may remember his vivacious escapades as “Kasey the Clown”.
Dick is survived by his wife of more than 58 years, Janice Young; son, Ronald Young of New Bern; daughter, Melanie Case of Newport; grandson Joshua Smith and his wife Jennifer; three granddaughters Jennifer O’Neil and her husband Matthew, Mallory Young, and Madison Stepp and six great-grandchildren. Surviving siblings include Susan Hall, Evajo Rubin, Carol Matakas, Cindy Olsen and Thomas Young. In honoring Dick’s wishes, a private graveside memorial for the immediate family will be held with full military honors with Chaplain Mario Ancira officiating.
