On the morning of February 22, 2024 Michael (Mike) Edmund Woody passed away peacefully at his home. Mike was the son of Thomas (Ed) Woody and Bonnie Jane (Minton) Woody who preceded him in death. Mike's adored wife Peggy A. Woody also preceded him in death.
Mike is survived by his daughter Jennifer Bray and her husband Chris Bray; granddaughter Megan Bray; brother Kenneth Woody and wife Sylvia; brother Jeff Woody; sister Patricia Woody Bissette and husband Larry Bissette.
Mike adored his immediate family as well as his friends, and was a person who was well known for always being ready to do anything for them. That love and caring will be sorely missed by all.
Mike was employed by the state Dept of Transportation in their bridge maintenance division and rose to a management position in the bridge maintenance crew until his retirement.
Mike had been suffering in retirement from a past work related back injury as well as a debilitating medical condition, both of which greatly hampered his physical well being in his later years of life. Even then Mike met the challenge of his physical limitations and ongoing pain with calm, grace and a stoic acceptance of his life now while dealing with his ongoing medical conditions.
Mike was born June 2, 1949 and lived his whole life in New Bern where he was a devoted sports fan, especially to New Bern High School football where he was a regular attendee at home games and even had a somewhat permanent seat reserved for him at the stadium for years, until his health conditions prevented him from attending in person. But he still always actively followed the team over the years.
Mike's favorite pastime was fishing, which brought him so much pleasure and enjoyment. Whether net fishing in the river at Minnesott or rod & reel fishing on his many trips to the ocean, he was an accomplished fisherman with both net and reels.
We believe it was the solitude of being in nature and the pursuit of what the next cast might bring that led to his enjoyment of the sport. He was the "fisherman" in the family we all looked to for advice and help in landing "the big one".
Mike was looked after and helped through his medical issues these past many years by his sister Patricia and her husband Larry, who both graciously spent their time and efforts on his behalf.
Special thanks to his best friend Dickie Tuttle, and to his neighbors Mary Dougherty and Wendy Fleming who offered their support and friendship to Mike over the past years. The family greatly appreciates them and their caring efforts.
Mike also had the help and assistance of a kind and comforting health care professional named Marie who took care of his ongoing and necessary medical treatments for the last 10 years, and for that the family is extremely grateful and appreciative of all her efforts to help Mike with his medical needs.
A graveside service will be held at 2 PM on Wednesday Feb 28th, 2024 at New Bern Memorial Cemetery at 1112 Chelsea Rd in New Bern.
In lieu of flowers, please feel free to make a donation to the non-profit Take-a-Kid Fishing programs or take a kid fishing on your own. Mike would have liked that.
