He was born in Syracuse New York on July 15, 1926. He served in the US Navy from 1944 to 1946 on the USS Sumter in the South Pacific and earned many WWII medals. He was in the Navy Reserve from 1946 to 1950. He graduated from Syracuse University in 1952 with an Engineering and Physical Science degree. He retired to New Bern in 1988.
While in New Bern he served on the Mayor’s Low Income Housing Board, volunteered for the Police Department and consulted as a volunteer on the development of Craven County and New Bern’s Geographic Information System (GIS). He was a member of the New Bern Elks Lodge # 764, American Legion Post #539, Veterans of Foreign War and the New Bern Golf and Country Club. He was an avid golfer and loved boating.
Joe was preceded in death by his son, Joseph.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Alvina; two daughters, Gertrude Corelli and Joe-Anne Mitchell and three sons, Patrick, Peter and James; two brothers, William and Fred and one sister, Nancy Hoalcraft; ten grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, July 10, 2013 at Cotten Funeral Home from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A memorial service with military honors will be held Thursday, July 11, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Cotten Funeral Home Chapel.
