Jean Grady Riggs passed away January 11, 2016. She is predeceased by her parents James Arthur Grady and Mary Eva Hill Grady, her husband Daniel Lynwood (Spud) Riggs and her son Dwight Daniel (Ike) Riggs. She is also predeceased by her twin sister Dixie Grady King and sister Mildred Grady Spear and brothers Jimmy Carlton Grady and Warren Franklin Grady and in-laws Dorothy Grady Dawson, Raymond Spear and John and Happy Taylor.
Jean was born November 14, 1932 in Deep Run, North Carolina and has lived in the New Bern/Jasper area since 1957. She attended Broad Street Christian Church
She earned her Master of Arts Degree in Education in 1969 from East Carolina University. She worked with the Craven County School system and the Jones County School system. She volunteered for the American Red Cross at Craven Regional Hospital for many years.
Throughout her life she enjoyed vegetable gardening and cooking her Southern food and was widely known for her Fried Chicken and collard greens. She loved cooking for her family and friends. She loved living on the farm, sitting on her back porch watching geese on the pond and the changing of the seasons.
Jean is survived by her daughter Amy Scarlett Riggs of Avon, NC and Amy’s son Joseph Christopher Riggs and wife Tracy and their children Daniel William Riggs and Courtney Riggs of Clearwater, Florida. She is Also survived by grandson Michael Riggs Stahl (son of predeceased Dwight Daniel (Ike) Riggs) and wife Brook and their children Grady and Mia Stahl of Lantana, Florida.
Jean is also survived by her sister Mary Grady Etheridge of Columbia and in-laws Ramona Grady, Hazel Smith, and Raymond Etheridge and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
A viewing/wake will be held at Cotten Funeral Home on Thursday January 12 from 12 noon until 1:30pm then at 2pm will be her graveside service at Greenleaf Memorial Park in New Bern, NC. Following graveside service the Family will receive family guest at Broad Street Christian Church, 802 Broad Street in New Bern, NC
