Born in Pauline, SC, she was the youngest of 8 children. She developed a love of cooking with home grown produce while growing up in a rural farm community. Attending Anderson College and Winthrop College she earned her Bachelor’s degree, and in 1962 moved to New Bern, NC with her husband Alva Jackson “Jackie” Waters.
She began her career as a social worker but her love of cooking coupled with her desire to improve lives led her to the Clinical Dietitians position at Craven County Hospital where she dedicated her career helping patients with their dietary needs and assisting them in improving their health through food and diet for 32 years until her retirement.
Her deep passion for food and cooking was not solely for patients. Jane loved to use food to bring immense joy and comfort to all she encountered. Jane was an extraordinary human being with that rare gift to exhibit unconditional love, strength, and generosity that could be seen in all aspects of her care for her family and friends. Loved by all who knew her, she will be missed greatly.
Jane is survived by her husband of 63 years, Alva Jackson “Jackie” Waters and her sister Patricia Compos, Pauline, SC. Her Children, Carla Waters Moffitt (Alan) Greensboro, NC, Carol J. Waters, New Bern, NC. Her Grandchildren, Stuart N. Moffitt (Meagan) Mooresville, NC and Grace Moffitt, Greensboro, NC. Her extra special sister-in-law Linda Jennings, Orange Beach, AL. Her Stepchildren, Charlene Slaybaugh (Rick) Thurmont, MD and Nancy Ensley, Jacksonville, NC., As well as her many step grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Jane was preceded in death by her parents, Stuart Nichols Miller and Virginia Morrow Miller of Pauline, SC. Her siblings, Lewis Miller (Spartanburg SC), Willam Miller (Cedaredge, Colorado), George Miller (Abbeville, SC), Elizabeth Gossett (Cross Anchor SC), Elenor Scott (Union, SC) and Joann Miller (Infant twin).
A Celebration of Life service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, New Bern, NC on September 14th, 2024, at 2:00 PM with a reception to follow.
