James “Jimmy” Maxwell Blythe Jr., 76, of New Bern, passed away Monday, August 28th, 2023. Jimmy was born June 9th, 1947. He attended Craven County public schools and was a graduate of New Bern High School.
Jimmy played baseball, football and wrestled all throughout his 4 years and graduated in 1966. His nickname on the basketball court was “spark plug” as he was the energy that ramped up and excited his teammates. After high school, Jimmy joined the US Navy. He served for 4 years and traveled all over the world on naval ships. He also enjoyed boxing while in the Navy and won golden gloves honors. He was truly loved by his entire Squadron.
His love for New Bern provided so many of his favorite memories, especially the ones made with friends when he owned and ran Diamond Jim’s in 1970 and again in the late 90’s. The friendships that he made during his life are ones that he deeply cherished. Family, Carolina Tarheel basketball, and his late dog Roscoe was truly his passion and love in life.
Jimmy was known for his generosity and touched many lives along his journey. His smile and laugh were contagious. He will always be remembered for his wildly entertaining stories, teasing jokes, unwavering work ethic and willingness to always show up for a friend. The stories that have been shared about Jimmy continue to warm the family’s hearts as he sincerely was loved by so many.
Jimmy lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures like good food, exercising, his love for music (while cutting a rug) and chatting with friends and family. He loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and beloved sister and appreciating his lifelong ties to the community and his neighbors.
Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents, Hilda McGhee Blythe and James Maxwell Blythe Senior. He is survived by his two children; Jenna and Patrick, who were the true loves of his life and his daily inspiration. His legacy will forever live on through his children and grandchildren; Daughter Jenna Caraway and husband Ricky, their two children Olivia and Lincoln. Son Patrick Blythe and wife Lindsey. He is also survived by his Sister Ann Blythe along with his nieces and nephews.
The family will receive visitors from 10:00 am to 11:00 am on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, at Cotten Funeral Home. A celebration of Jimmy's life will begin at 11:00 am. Following the service, Jimmy will be laid to rest at Greenleaf Memorial Park.
