Dr. Jack Hinton died suddenly on Sunday, April 6. A beloved citizen of New Bern for more than thirty years, Dr. Hinton served as the pastor of Tabernacle Baptist Church and as the interim pastor for numerous area congregations. He also served churches in Mebane, Maysville, Fayetteville, and Greensboro. Most recently, he was the Congregational Missionary for the Atlantic Baptist Association. Preacher, pastor, author, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, these are some of his most cherished roles, but of course, good and faithful servant is how he would most wish to be remembered. Dr. Hinton loved a long walk on the beach, a plate of ripe tomatoes, a good country music show, a complicated crossword puzzle, and knowing that all three of his children were preaching on any given Sunday. He was a man who cared deeply for others, believed in the best in humankind, and had an unwavering faith in the goodness of God.
He will be missed by many but especially by his immediate family, his wife of fifty-eight years, Shirley, his children, Dr. Sharon Bender, her husband Wade Bender, Rev. Kerry Hinton, his wife Lynda Hinton, and Rev. Lynne Hinton and her husband Bob Branard, his four grandchildren, Berry, Laura, Stephen, and Michael, and their families, including his four great grandchildren.
The service of remembrance will be held at Tabernacle Baptist Church, Thursday, April 10 at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to Tabernacle Baptist Church or to your favorite charity.
