Hobey Glenn White was born on January 24, 1958 at the old St Luke’s Hospital in New Bern, NC.
An only child, Hobey had been interested in Law Enforcement since he was 13 years old. His father, Marion White was the only Private Investigator in town and as a boy, Hobey became involved in minor investigation work. As he got older and throughout his life, he worked most of the cases with his father, Marion White.
After graduating from New Bern High School in 1977, he worked as Security Officer for Ramada Inn of New Bern for four years. With that experience, in addition to working security with his father for the town of Trent Woods, he accepted the position as Security Officer for Fairfield Harbor. Following his calling for law enforcement, he joined the Craven County Sheriff Department under the direction of the late Sheriff Pete Bland. Hobey was one of the best and he thoroughly enjoyed his role as public servant. He also looked good in his uniform! His commitment, diligence, and ability to deal effectively with others in difficult situations, soon earned him the rank of Sergeant. Following his time there, he worked with City of Havelock Police Department for a short time, but the duties of a City Cop was just not as fulfilling. So, dreaming of a larger paycheck, Hobey explored other avenues and what man doesn’t like to live at the beach, be captain of his own boat and get paid for it? So, off he went to Marine Fisheries in Carteret County where he patrolled the open waters and enjoyed the sunshine.
Slowing down for health reasons, Hobey returned to New Bern where he retired. In late 2015, he reconnected with his high school sweetheart who he had declined to marry in 1980. Ironically, he kept the love letters and her photo in a safe all these years that she had mailed to him in June 1976. He told everyone, that it was the worst mistake of his life! She finally agreed to marry on May 8, 2021. As fate would have it, their love story ended after only two years.
Hobey is preceded in death by his parents, Marion White and Joy Batchelor White. He is survived by his loving wife of 2 years, Darleen Boswell White; mother-in-law Velma Boswell, father-in-law Jerry Boswell, brother-in-law David Boswell (Kelly) and sister-in-law Debbie Boswell Hardwick. He is also survived by his Aunts Jean Batchelor of Raleigh, Doris Cashwell of Mount Olive, Patsy White Russell (Eddie), Uncle Aldridge White (Louise), and many cousins.
